The Israel army is reportedly using a number of artificial intelligence systems for targeted attacks in Gaza. The military at one point identified 37,000 Hamas targets using an AI programme called Lavender.
The Lavender AI is reportedly being used to identify Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) members as potential bombing targets.
The idea behind deploying an artificial intelligence system is to eliminate the delay caused by human involvement, which restricts the army’s ability to identify targets and obtain approval.Alongside Lavender another AI-based system called the Gospel is being used, which recommends buildings and structures as targets instead of individuals.
There is currently no information about the specific data used to train Lavender or The Gospel’s algorithm. However, according to reports, Lavender achieved a 90 per cent accuracy rate.Lavender software looks at information collected from most of Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million residents using mass surveillance. It then assesses and ranks how likely each person is to be involved in Hamas or PIJ’s military wing
